For a long time, Khon Pi Luang has been an integral part of life along the Mekong river. It comprises rocky areas, ridges and sandbanks, which make up a bedrock for an extensive biodiversity to flourish. From people on both sides of the river to a myriad of flora and fauna, their biorhythm lives harmoniously within the seasonal cycle of Khon Pi Luang. However, their symbiotic relationship has been disrupted by an invasive development starting four decades ago.

In ‘No Distance to Khon Pi Laung’ exhibition, ubatsat uses his art to put the spotlight on an urgent environmental issue surrounding the Mekong river, particularly in Khon Pi Luang. From its significance and disturbance, the artist presents the result of his empirical on-field research in his artworks.

The exhibition features 2 bodies of work. Created specifically for this exhibition is a large scale painting on canvas and a documentary video titled ‘No Distance to Khon Pi Luang.’  This artwork is in dialogue with ‘White Eel in the Dawn of the Exile’ which consists of 168 wood panels using a printmaking technique.

‘No Distance to Khon Pi Luang’ is a semi-abstract painting depicting a huge rock formation known as ‘Pha Year’ or Year cliff which is located in Khon Pi Luang’s area. Through the artwork, ubatsat intends to present the area’s biodiversity and rich history that are currently in a precarious state.

Khon Pi Laung is an underwater trench with aggressive water channels; often resulting in a dangerous whirlpool where the locals believe ghosts would wander into and get lost, hence the name in Thai—คอนผีหลง. Located in Chiang Khong district, Chiangrai, it comprises 11 unique ecosystems native to the Mekong, where various species feast, nurse and shelter. It also nourishes the communities along both sides of the river by providing a ground for fishery with perfect conditions for native freshwater organisms to thrive. Khon Pi Luang enriches the communities spiritually as well. It provides a ground for folklore to stem and answer their curiosity towards mystical nature, and a place where their origin – their identity can nestle in.

Pha Year is one of half-submerged rock formations in Khon Pi Luang that form a significant vantage point for its locale and accordingly an impediment to foreign intervention. Structures of this kind help to subdue strong currents during the wet season and retain a slow current in the dry season. Consequently, this contributes to a more stable progress through a continuum of seasonal changes, rather than an abrupt one. Pha Year, therefore, symbolizes a mediator between Khon Pi Luang and external influences. The Mekong river is the longest river in Southeast Asia, which stretches through 6 territories. It was supposed to be an international trade route if not for its rocky river bed that makes navigation difficult. In fact, multiple projects sponsored by powerful stakeholders aiming to blast open the Mekong have been persistently proposed throughout the last decades. Metaphorically presented as an analogy of an obtrusive expansion led by capitalistic superpowers against the natives in their motherland, ‘No Distance to Khon Pi Luang’ examines how much the distance and barrier are actually left in between.

‘White Eel in the Dawn of the Exile’ is another artwork displayed in conjunction with ‘No Distance to Khon Pi Luang.’ ubatsat compiles and externalizes both tangible and intangible components that would constitute today’s Mekong river. Since the construction of the first dam on the Mekong, it has transformed the landscape and engendered continuing conflict. With many dams built upstream within the Chinese border, countries downstream are suffering from the arbitrary rise and fall of water streams and disappearance of sediment deposits. Fishes and birds get lost in this fluctuation and find no place to shelter. Similarly, the local community gets caught up in these unpredictable circumstances that intrusively threaten their way of life. ubatsat gathers all these fractions of memory and struggle while manifesting them with different colors and forms in his work. Folklore and real-world experience of those who are living downstream are recounted in ‘White Eel in the Dawn of the Exile’, along with alien objects that are introduced as part of a mega project aiming to facilitate cross-border transport and trade in the Mekong subregion.

The ‘White Eel in the Dawn of the Exile’ is made up of wooden panels that are collectively exhibited as one large artwork, the same way that the Mekong river is presented individually. A local folklore of “The White Eel of Yonok Nakhon” which is commonly quoted in the northern region, inspired this work. They believe that before Wiang Nong Lom, there used to be an ancient city called Yonok that was sunk by the wrath of the King of Naga. He wreaked vengeance after he heard that his son, the large white (albino) eel was caught, cut into pieces, and then distributed among the citizens of Yanok as provision. Similarly, the Mekong river nowadays is also being chopped into pieces and distributed for personal utilization among its neighboring nations. Not all pieces are equal, yet an overall over-consumption and man-made perturbation are undeniably an antecedent to a potential downfall.

No Distance to Khon Pi Luang

No Distance to Khon Pi Luang

“White Eel in the Dawn of the Exile” หรือ ปลาไหลเผือก เป็นอีกหนึ่งชิ้นงานที่ถูกจัดแสดงคู่กับ No Distance to Khon Pi Luang

White Eel in the Dawn of the Exile
