Simulacra

Arahmaiani & Thaiwijit Puengkasemsomboon

Warin Lab Contemporary presents a dual exhibition by Arahmaiani Feisal of Indonesia and Thaiwijit Puengkasemsomboon of Thailand.

In line with the gallery’s focus on the ecosystem and sustainability issues, the exhibition creates a dialogue between the two artists who reflect on the emergency of the environmental detriment.

Thaiwijit focuses on the idea of humanity being engulfed in consumption, desires and anxieties. The walls will be filled with portraits, or simulacra of imaginative people, dissatisfied with their own life, in search for happiness and self fulfilment at a cost of the environment.

Arahmaiani, on the other hand, will be showing medium sized acrylic on canvas depicting floral portraits, simulacra of a nature that it is disappearing because of our aggression and desire.  Her artwork draws attention to the precious nature that human beings take for granted.

In their individual art practices, Thaiwijit and Arahmaiani tackle the environment issue from distinctive angles.  Thaiwijit gives the second life to scrap materials such as cardboard boxes and old magazines while Arahmaiani’s practice is to engage with small communities to create projects that address the environmental issue of their locality.
