Jamilah Haji’s art is a profound marker and celebration of her faith, integral to her life and purpose. Growing up as one of four children in a family of hijab makers, Haji was drawn to sewing textile techniques from an early age. Her early embroideries contributed to the family income and laid the foundation for her textile-based practice. Haji further honed her skills and artistic vision during her art education at Prince of Songkla University and later while she pursued a Master of Fine Art at Silpakorn University

Today, using her mother’s sewing machine, Haji creates large, densely layered textiles that express her deep personal response to life in Southern Thailand. Her work honors the Muslim woman way of life, reflecting their roles and responsibilities to their families and nation. Her embroideries feature figures and practices of these women such as daily prayers, bridal status and motherhood, using organza, lace fabrics and vibrant machine embroidery to convey her devoutness and emotions.

Haji has earned recognition locally and internationally for her work. In 2017, she held a solo exhibition The World of Muslim Women at The National Gallery in Bangkok, Thailand. Over the past decade, she has participated in numerous group exhibitions both domestically and internationally. Recently, in 2023, her work was featured in the S.O.E. We Trade Everything Festival in Khon Kaen, Thailand. Other notable exhibitions include the Kenduri Seni Nusantara Art Festival in Patani, Thailand (2022); the 10th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art at Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art (2021); and the 3rd Young Artists Talent Art Exhibition in Los Angeles, USA (2020).
